Many parents question the right time for their child to have an orthodontic check-up. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7, but often times, orthodontic treatment will begin around age 11 or 12. Below are several reasons for an orthodontic check-up.
- Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw formation and emerging teeth even if baby teeth are still present.
- An orthodontist can identify a developing problem such as your child’s bite, and can monitor it until beginning of treatment.
- Sometimes, early detection of issues can prevent more serious problems that may develop at a later age.
- Early treatment may give your orthodontist the chance to guide jaw growth, lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct oral habits and even guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position.
By receiving an orthodontic checkup prior to braces treatment, a patient will receive the best opportunity for an optimal smile and healthy mouth.
