The Right Time for an Orthodontic Check

The Right Time for an Orthodontic Check

Many parents question the right time for their child to have an orthodontic check-up. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7, but often times, orthodontic treatment will begin around age 11 or 12. Below are several reasons for an orthodontic check-up.

  1. Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw formation and emerging teeth even if baby teeth are still present.
  2. An orthodontist can identify a developing problem such as your child’s bite, and can monitor it until beginning of treatment.
  3. Sometimes, early detection of issues can prevent more serious problems that may develop at a later age.
  4. Early treatment may give your orthodontist the chance to guide jaw growth, lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct oral habits and even guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position.

By receiving an orthodontic checkup prior to braces treatment, a patient will receive the best opportunity for an optimal smile and healthy mouth.
